This is a sensation! After residing in Pennsylvania for 34 years, the photography and layout in the calendar brought back so many memories of places I had tucked away in my mind. I am now a resident of Virginia, but I will never forget the beauty of my life in the Keystone State! Thank you!

This lushly illustrated book belongs in every American library and any home that values diversity and Old World traditions. Dozens of bright, colorful photographs by Blair Seitz make the lively text by Georg R. Sheets a pleasure to behold. From the Native American Festival held in Sullivan County to the San Rocco Festival held in Aliquippa, this book makes you feel like you are there. Ukrainians, Italian, Croatians, Irish, Swedish, Lithuanians, and Jewish groups are just a few of the traditions explored here. Take a look at the foods, crafts, parades, festivals, music and holidays that add to the festive Pennsylvania experience reflected around the globe. It's a must for anyone conscious of the fact that we live on a very small globe, indeed.

A New World of Outings
Pennsylvania Snacks" is a treasure . . . for parents, for grandparents, and for adults of all ages who enjoy offbeat activities.

For an outing, if you take kids to the movies, and they may remember it for months. Take them to a pretzel factory and they'll remember it for years, or for a lifetime. Want to create really sweet memories . . . take your children, or your grandchildren . . . or whomever. . . to a candy factory. They are not likely to ever forget it.

Sharon Hernes Silverman, a writer with many credits in travel publications, leads her readers by the hand, telling them where to find the food factories, and all about the tours, including previews. She is extremely thorough, and even takes the trouble to explain the manufacturing processes in clear terms that are bound to add greatly to what visitors will understand about what they see in the factories.

This book is a passport to many very pleasant and interesting days.

A wonderful find
I bought this book for my husband, a Fairport, NY native. He absolutely loved the book and recommended it to many friends and family members. I am now purchasing another copy for a friend from Fairport as a gift. My husband really enjoyed all the old photos. He learned so much about the town in spite of the fact he lived there his whole childhood.

Pocahontas's People: The Powhatan Indians of Virginia Through Four Centuries (Civilization of the American Indian Series, No. 196)
Published in Hardcover by Univ of Oklahoma Pr (Trd) (October, 1990)
Author: Helen C. Rountree
Average review score:

The Powhatan and English Cultural Differences
Being a descendant of the Wicocomico Indian Tribe, a chiefdom of the Powhatan Empire and a 7th great grandson of King William Taptico of the above tribe; Ms Rountree's book took me on a trip back into time and verified much of my previous research into my Native American Heritage.

This was a well written book on a subject that has been neglected for years. It discusses the terrible clash between Colonial America and the Powhatan Empire; a period that set the tone for the treatment of Native Americans in America for years to come and continues today. Considering the poor records that Colonial America maintained, Ms Rountree did an exceptional job in uncovering long lost information and at last brought to light the treatment the Powhatans received at the hands of Colonial America. The period of 1607 thru 1775 was the Powhatans "Wounded Knee". Ms Rountree did an excellent job in bringing to light much of the injustices done to the Powhatans.

For the Powhatan Empire researcher, this is a book that should be on your shelf.

Pocahontas: The Life and the Legend
Published in Paperback by DaCapo Press (April, 1996)
Author: Frances Mossiker
Average review score:

Separates the life from the legend....
The author carefully examines all the evidence of the life of Pocahontas - through anthopological, psychological, sociological analysis as well as the historical record. Of course much of what is commonly known is taken from the extensive and self-serving journals of John Smith, which the author takes with an appropriate grain of salt.

This is an excellent antidote to the Disney version and a must-read for students of pre-colonial U.S. history.

This book provide a fantastic glimpse of what life was really like in Jamestown in the very early days, as well as what sort of political milieu was present in tidewater Virginia at the time of settlers' arrival.
